  2.  
  3. SUMMARY:  APRS contains a very powerful MAP making and editing program
  4. called MAPFIX33.EXE.  In addition, there are three other important MAP 
  5. README files:
  6.  
  7.    MAPMAKIN.txt describes the format of APRS maps and how to make them.  
  8.    MAPS-CD.txt  tells you how to make maps from the USGS CD ROMS.  This
  9.                 is where all the action is.
  10.    MAPS-HST.txt covers how to drive around, save a track history,
  11.                 and then use that track to add to an APRS map!
  12.    MAPFIX.txt   describes how to use MAPFIX for editing and making maps
  13.    ANYxxx.map   APRS maps are DOS TEXT.  Look at one!

  15. MAP DISTRIBUTION:
  16.  
  17. The basic APRSxx.zip file contains the major regional maps that will 
  18. cover the interstates and some major highways.  The APRS distro disk
  19. also contains an additional XmapsVV.zip for your region.  APRS uses 
  20. special MAPLIST files to tell APRS which map to use for any given cursor 
  21. location and range.  The default is MAPLIST.USA.  Use the MAPS-CONFIG-
  22. CHANGE command to select the alternate MAPLIST for your area.  To see 
  23. the boundaries of all the maps in a given MAPLIST, use the MAPS-PLOTS-
  24. BORDERS command.  I maintain all of the following MAPLISTS and distro 
  25. files.

  31. MAP DIRECTORY STRUCTURE:  Prior to summer 1997, APRS expected to find 
  32. all maps in the APRS\MAPS directory.  Problem was that this turned in
  33. to single directory with hundreds of files in them.  To clean this up,
  34. now all of my distributions have all of the maps for a given disto,
  35. in a subdirectory by that same name.  So all of my EAST coast maps 
  36. will be found in the APRS\MAPS\EAST subdirectory for example.  To make
  37. this work, the MAPLIST.EAS was modified to refer to all of the maps
  38. with their full file-spec, instead of just their name.  I renamed all
  39. of my distros with this organization to Xmaps16.zip or later....
  40.  
  41. For backwards compatibility, all of the regional USA maps that are
  42. included on the basic APRSxxx disk will always stay in the APRS\MAPS
  43. directory.  Also you will find a XmapsVV.TXT file there too, which
  44. identifies all of the distributions you have loaded.  SImply do a MAPS-
  45. CONFIGURATION-DISTROS command to see this list.

  133. ALL APRS STATE MAPFILES SHOULD CONFORM TO THE FOLLOWING RULES:

  135. INDIVIDUAL MAPS:  If you make a disk or FILE with individual maps in it,
  136. send it to your state map coordinator and include a piece of paper with 
  137. the exact LAT/LONG/RANGE and insertion instructions so that he can edit 
  138. it into his MAPLIST.  Include instructions on where to insert the new 
  139. map(s) in the heirarchical list.
  140.  
  141. NEW IN VERSION APRS793!  Inspired by a comment from Mike Musick, 
  142. APRS can now include SUBdirectories in your MAPLIST files so that all of 
  143. your maps can be in a single subdirectory in the MAPS directory.  WIll 
  144. make for faster loading and easier maintenance... Note, that is is not 
  145. backward compatible, so please label your new distro package distnictly..
  146.  
  147. STATE MAP COORDINATORS:  Please, DO NOT modify MAPLIST.USA, or any of
  148. my standard distribution MAPLISTS.  Their integrity is my responsibility.   
  149. Also, do not make any changes to MY maps without CHANGING the map name.   
  150. When users unzip your files, there should be NO FILES in your files that  
  151. can unknowingly replace my original distro files.  I WELCOME your changes  
  152. to MY maps, but send them to me (with a unique name) so that I can be the  
  153. one to make the change to the distribution copy...
  154.  
  155.      ALL mapnames should begin with your two letter STATE abbreviation.
  156. Your distribution files should contain ONLY YOUR maps, and NO OTHERS for 
  157. which you are not responsible.
  158.  
  159.      Build your MAPLIST.XX to include your XX state maps and all larger 
  160. maps that contain your state all the way up to WORLD.map.  Use my MAPLIST
  161. .USA as the beginning point and add your MAPS to it.  This is so that 
  162. users of your maplist can still zoom to other areas of the country and 
  163. still see the detail of the USA distribution without having to load 
  164. another maplist..
  165.  
  166.      All XX state map distribution packages should be named consistently
  167. as XXmapsVV.zip, where VV is the version number.  Everyone can use that
  168. list to see the extent of your efforts and responsibility. The version
  169. number lets everyone know whats new, and lets BBS SYSOPS know whats OLD
  170. and can be deleted.
  171.  
  172.      Distribute interim UPDATE files as XXaftrVV.zip.  This file will
  173. contain all of the NEW maps and changes for state XX, AFTER version VV.
  174.  
  175.  
  176. FINALLY, to build your zip file, perform the following steps:
  177. 1)  Create a temorary file (lets call it TMPMAPS)
  178. 2)  Make MAPS and MAPLISTS subdirectories
  179. 3)  Now make a MYMAPS subdirectory in the MAPS directory
  180. 4)  Copy all of YOUR maps in to the MAPS\MYMAPS subdirectory
  181. 5)  Copy your MAPLIST.XX into the MAPLISTS directory
  182. 6)  Then use PKZIP -rp XXmapsvv.zip to zip up your package.  
  183. This way the directory structure is preserved and when the user uses 
  184. PKUNZIP -d XXmapsVV.zip, he will get the MAPLIST and the MAPS in the 
  185. right places.

  187. If we are all consistent in our distribution packages, then the users
  188. will have a lot less troubles...

  191. CAUTION:  When adding MAPS to any MAPLIST.xxx file, the location of the
  192. map in the list is VERY IMPORTANT.  Your new map must go AFTER any other
  193. larger map covering the same area, and BEFORE any smaller maps which
  194. overlap or may be included in your map.  THis includes the edges of
  195. surounding areas and states.  Use the MAPS-HEIRARCHY or MAPS BORDERS
  196. command to see the effect..

  199. I HAVE WRITTEN A PROGRAM CALLED MKmapLST.bas which will scan a given
  200. directory and will BUILD a maplist from the data in the files.  This
  201. list will NOT be in the proper heirarchical order, but can be used with
  202. an editor to cut and paste together a list for your area.  This program 
  203. will only be useful to dedicated map makers.  It reads the map CENTER 
  204. coordinates in the various MAP files and builds a simple list of them.  
  205. If SOMEONE would like to add to this program to give it the intelligence 
  206. to properly overlap the heirarchical structure, PLEASE DO SO!

  209. COMMERCIAL MAP MAKERS:  I would encourage anyone that has the time and 
  210. the energy to consider going into business making APRS maps for hire.  
  211. Since APRS maps are intended for the public domain, do not expect to get 
  212. per-copy fees or royalties, but there should be many HAM clubs or groups 
  213. that might like to HIRE you to make a map for them.  If you are going
